Savage Arena reopens with UMass vs. Toledo

Tonight was one of the best basketball games I have shot so far this season. One reason was the Savage Arena will reopen after 345 days of construction. I have seen all of the renovation about every month since they started way back when. Second reason is first home game for any sport is always packed with fans and family and people coming out to support the Rockets.

I got to Savage around 5:30 and I am glad I got there early because they wouldn’t let the media park any where close I had to park in Lot 10 and walk all the way over to the arena. I had my roller bag carrying a 300mm on my shoulder and it was raining  and freezing outside so that didn’t make me a happy camper.

Here is a map showing where I parked and where I had to walk to.

As soon as I got in side I unpacked my gear and was ready to get work try to get some cool feature photos of people looking at all of the new stuff inside the arena. Not much luck because there weren’t very many people there at the time. I did get a cool photo of the mascot with the word Rocket on the ground.

Then I headed outside and got a picture of the giant ass rocket that is outside and is suppose to have smoke pouring out of the bottom but must not have that finished yet.

Then headed back inside to get some stock photos and transmit some photos.

As the team came out for the National Anthem I got this photo of Toledo’s Jonathan Amos (4).

Then they did some cool intro stuff with the team.

Then the game was about to start so I had to hustle to high position to get the tip off. I want to incorporate  the logo on the court and the players. I want to shoot from the cat walk, but I didn’t allow myself enough time to get up there to shoot was I wanted.

I headed down to my spot on the court and got to work get solid shots through out the game.

I got bored shooting action and I noticed the floor was really showing reflections so I laid the camera upside down the the floor to get the lens as close to the floor as possible. It could be better but it was a start and something to work from for the rest of the reason.

Then for the half time entertainment there was this freak of a gymnast girl who shoots a bow & arrow with her feet, kind of weird? Yes!

Then right before the start of the 2nd half I headed up to get a overall shot of the arena with the players bring the ball up court.

I then headed down to the floor busted out the 300mm and got this solid loose ball photo.

Then Toledo’s Head Coach Gene Cross just started screaming for no reason, at least I didn’t see anything.

After Jonathan Amos (4) got fouled he point like he was giving a first down sign in football.

Toledo was trailing by 1 point Toledo’s Anthony Byrd (34) drive to the basket and it didn’t go in but Justin Anyijong (1) tipped the ball in for the win. That happened so fast I didn’t even realize I got the photos until I was editing back in the media room.
